Archie Carl Dorsey was born on September 22, 1937 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the first-born child of the late Katherine and Jessie Dorsey. Archie was the name of his father’s brother and Carl, his mother’s brother. Throughout his life he was called by both of those names, in addition to “Bunny,” his childhood nickname.
He grew up in the Hough neighborhood in Cleveland and graduated from East High School. After high school, he attended Bowling Green State University for one year and then enlisted in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1962.
Carl loved cars! Everything about them! He raced them, fixed them and spent a great portion of his life pursuing that passion; starting with being employed by the General Motors Company in the early 60’s. In the early 70’s, he fulfilled his dream of owning a gas station. For a couple of years, he operated the Shell gas station that was located on the corner of Mayfield Road and Superior Avenue. It was a huge undertaking that unfortunately caused him bankruptcy. However, nothing would stop him from doing what he loved. He worked as a mechanic at his friend’s Shell Station on 116th and Kinsman for many years and at another Shell station in East Cleveland before retiring.
Carl was married to Carolyn Dorsey and had two children, Shireen and Darren. They divorced and many years later, he married Simone Price.
He was quite intelligent, loved reading and really enjoyed having discussions/debates about a wide range of topics. In the summer time, he worked diligently in his garden. He loved visiting with his family, especially his elders. Carl also enjoyed his early morning runs with a group of friends who met up every day. Unfortunately, those runs took a toll on his knees and both had to be replaced, which ended his running days. But it wasn’t long before he recovered and started taking morning walks instead. Sadly, tragedy struck in 2014 when he suffered a massive stroke, leaving his left side permanently paralyzed and his speech severely impaired.
For the last six years of his life, he was bedridden at his home. However, his life was still enriched because of the love, care and devotion provided by his sister, Diane and many helpers who assisted her: Eloise Marlow, Vedez Gilcrease, Erica Jackson, Stacy Sayles and Daphne Barnes. They are all true angels and cannot be thanked enough for their services.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Katherine and Jessie Dorsey; sister, Alene and wife, Simone Price.
Carl leaves many people who will cherish his memories, his former wife, Carolyn; daughter, Shireen; son, Darren; sister, Diane (Willie), THE MOST LOVING, CARING AND DEVOTED PERSON IN HIS LIFE; sister, Shelley McCoy; grandchildren, Asante’ Jones, Keyanna Dorsey and Keyshawn Dorsey; nephew, Brandon McCoy and several cousins who are as close as siblings.
