Danny Walters was born on July 24, 1927, in Dooley County, Georgia to Green and Annie Walters (both deceased). He grew up in Byromville, Georgia, where he went to school and worked on the family farm. While in Georgia, he married Bessie Smith and from that, union came six children. Danny moved to Akron, Ohio, where he met and married Gwendolyn J. Loftin. From that union came five children and a more than 65 year journey of love.
Danny loved the Lord and became a member of St. John CME Church where he was an active member of the senior usher board, a former trustee and a former Board of Christian Education member. Each Sunday, you could see Mr. Walters on the left door, and later on, the back pew on the left, greeting members and giving them their church bulletins.
Danny Walters retired as a foreman from XXth Century Heating and Ventilating Company after 40 years of employment. He was also a self-employed handyman who could fix just about anything. He was an avid fisherman who owned two boats. He also loved gardening, playing pool, bowling an, exercising. Most important, Danny loved his family. He took on the role as the family patriarch even though he was not the eldest. He was always there to help his children and their offspring as well as his brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. He would drive from Akron to Florida as if it were a ride around the block, to help or just to visit. He hosted several family reunions. Most of his southern family affectionately called him “Honey”.
In addition to his parents and first wife, Danny Walters was preceded in death by his daughter Joyce Walters; son E.C. “Easy” Walters; sisters Willie Mae Simpson, Bertha Hamilton, Maggie Lean Fudge, Minnie Olgelsby, Alvina McKenzie, and Willie Maude Lester; brothers Antly Walters, Green Walters, and Lloyd Walters; grandsons Elbert Suttles and Lemorris Baity; and great granddaughter Aolani McCray.
