Ted Gardner left a message on January 11, 2019:
Got to see and talk at length with Derwin at the Red&White Shaker Daze event. He told me of his illness. His wife Felecia was with him. Derwin was a super strong highly intelligent man, proud to be an African American. Although he was 3 years behind me @Shaker we got even closer as we ended up working together at TransOhio Savings Bank. We would go to lunch often. We went out for drinks after work. Cut it up, loud and crazy... Derwin was "large on the set"...as we used to say it. Smooth talking, sharp dresser. When Derwin left the bank and moved on to selling life insurance he would tell me how respected and well remembered my dad was as the first black $1M life insurance salesmen at New York Life. He said Ted, I didn't know your dad worked for NYL? Your dad is a legend around here. Picture on the wall and everything...Yeah boy! That was D-man. Going to miss him. Tons of wonderful memories. All sincere condolences to his entire family and legends of friends, co workers, acquaintances, and admirers. He was one of the few people who makes me smile just thinking about him.
